Town restores four of world’s rare ordnance boundary stones Niagara-on-the-Lake, a small town with a big historical claim, is celebrating the restoration of four unique artifacts — centuries-old military survey stones that once marked British land. Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to more ordnance boundary stones than any other town in the world, and now, four of them have been painstakingly restored to their original glory. “These were installed by the British Army in the 1800s to mark military land,” explained local historian Ted Rumble. “There were originally 37 stones.” Of those, 19 stones have been discovered. “That’s more than any town in the world. Most towns, especially in Britain or Ireland, only have one or two.”

The town has identified 42 properties that need to be designated before they are removed from the heritage registry on Jan. 1, 2027
